During my research process, I came to realise the amount of prompts that popped up upon visiting a website to collect cookies. This led to the research that raised the question of what exactly companies are collecting such cookies for and the extent of data extracted. Despite having settings to turn off all kinds of cookie selection from the web browser settings, I was keen to look into the future of "what ifs" and applying as a speculative design program.
Program used: ChatGPT, Python, OpenCV, Selenium
As Selenium is known for scraping and automating task, I used it's function to automate the process of detecting cookie collection prompts everytime I surf the net. The code works by detecting keywords of "cookie" and "policy", and upon detecting the words, it draws a bounding box around the text.
I tried a few variations to how I could shield user's from the cookie prompts with the idea of "What if all data collection for AI becomes mandatory, in such situations, how can we safeguard and go against data collection?".
The idea does have flaws as to why we would ever need a cookie prompt shield program if it's mandatory, hence the experiment itself still lacks a substantial evidence to build up the narrative to resonate with the audience. However, I still believe it brings attention to cookie collection prompts, as we come to get comfortable with ignoring such prompts, it loses the awareness behind what cookie collection when people click "Accept" without second thoughts. These also lead to other kinds of data collection that we seem to not care when we accept the terms & conditions without reading it.
